Any Porsche 959 is a sexy beast, however this black-over-carmel-brown 1988 model, which is headed to Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach auction this August, is no exception.
The Porsche 959 remains one of the most interesting super cars ever built. In years past, they were an extra-rare sight in the U.S., as only about 50 or so of the 329-337 models built (numbers vary) originally made it here, under show-and-display waivers. However, since the majority of 959s are now more than 25 years old, in recent years importation on cars like this 1988 has been open, which is good news for American car collectors and enthusiasts.
Gooding & Company is calling this black beauty a “Komfort” model which was a designation used by Porsche to differentiate the road-going models from their racing brethren (known as “Sport”). Powered by a 444-hp, twin-turbocharged 2.8-liter flat-six connected to a six-speed manual with a unique shift linkage, the 959 was far ahead of its time in both speed and technology. In our 1987 test of the car, we achieved a 0-60 time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 190 mph, our highest-ever recorded top speed to that date. One of the car’s more revolutionary tech advancements was its all-wheel drive system, which could distribute torque depending on the dynamic load on each wheel, or could be locked at a fixed torque split.
While details on this particular car are still limited, the auction house does state that it’s one of three cars with this striking color combination, and has been factory maintained its entire life. The estimated sale price is $1.6-1.8 million which, if proven accurate, would reflect the massive increase in vintage Porsche prices that’s taken hold in the last few years.
