Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4² to Stomp into Series Production

The hints were audible, now it is confirmed: The Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4² will be added to the regular lineup of G-Wagens. We drove the off-roader earlier this year; fitted with portal axles, it proved itself to be unstoppable even on the roughest terrain.

Powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that is rated at 416 horsepower, this Austrian-built G-Wagen is fitted with 325/55 tires on 22-inch wheels. Ground clearance is an unsurpassed 17.7 inches, and it can wade through water 39.4 inches deep. Despite its weight and less-than optimal aerodynamic properties, the sprint from zero to 62 mph takes a commendably brisk 7.4 seconds, and the behemoth carries on beyond 100 mph with remarkable alacrity.

In the German market, the G500 4×4² is priced at 226,100 Euro (including a 19 per cent value-added tax), a little over twice as much as the regular G500 on which it is based. It is, however, cheaper than the most powerful G-Wagen—the 621-hp G65 AMG.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t ruled out a U.S.-market launch of the G500 4×4², even though the three-axled G63 AMG 6×6, a precursor of the new model, was never offered here. Is production limited? No, Daimler says. We suspect they’ll easily sell every one they make.
