GMC Adds Apple CarPlay to Yukon, Sierra, and Canyon, Misses Opportunity to Call It TruckPlay

General Motors’ truck-slinging division, GMC, has announced that it is following its corporate brethren at Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac in offering Apple’s CarPlay connectivity.

For 2016, Sierra and Canyon pickups and Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs equipped with the seven- or eight-inch IntelliLink infotainment touch screens will have CarPlay functionality, which allows occupants to mirror some smartphone apps directly on the display. Users can also access functions using their vehicle’s onboard voice-command system to control Apple’s Siri digital assistant. The supported apps include text messages, phone functions, Apple Maps, the iOS music and podcast apps, and a few other third-party music apps that include Spotify, iHeartRadio, and MLB At Bat.

GMC also announced Android Auto integration, but it will be limited to select Sierras which feature a seven-inch screen at the beginning of the model year before rolling out to all Canyons, Sierras, and Yukons—which is to say those with eight-inch screens—at a later date.
