As much as we love driving the current generation of Cadillacs—see for example our recent reviews of the ATS-V sedan and coupe, or our long-term wrap-up of our CTS Vsport—we remain frustrated and annoyed with the brand’s CUE touch-screen infotainment interface. Come 2016, however, most Cadillacs will get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which could prove far more convenient than dealing with CUE on its own.
The Cadillac news regarding Apple CarPlay and Android Auto comes on the heels of similar announcements from Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC, so it was hardly surprising. CarPlay will be standard in any 2016 Caddy that has the eight-inch CUE touch screen, save the SRX (which will have to wait until its replacement, the XT5, arrives next spring). Android Auto will not be ready at the start of the model year, but will arrive some months later.
As further evidence of its cutting-edge, high-tech hipness, Cadillac points out that its models added 4G LTE internet connectivity for 2015, along with wireless charging of cell phones. (You do need to connect your phone via the USB cable, however, in order for the phone-integration systems to work.)
For its part, the much-maligned CUE system is also getting an update for 2016 that is supposed to speed up voice recognition, nav searches, music playback, and system startup, as well as simpler access to some functions. The Escalade, CTS, and XTS will also add 360-degree camera capability to their quiver. But we’re betting we’d still rather skip CUE.
