Chevrolet has already told us that the redesigned, 2016 Cruze will be larger and lighter than the outgoing model. And that it—along with lots of other 2016 Chevrolets—will offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And we’ve published completely undisguised spy pictures of Chevy’s new compact sedan, so we know what it will look like. Now comes word from Automotive News that the new Cruze will be sold in the U.S. market not only as a sedan but also as a hatchback.
In other markets, the current-model Cruze is sold as a four-door hatchback [pictured above]—we even reviewed it a while back—but the AN report states that the company announced at a Chevrolet dealer meeting that the new generation will bring a five-door version to our shores for the first time. Timing is said to be the first quarter of next year, which would trail the redesigned sedan by a few months.
Hatchbacks have long been dismissed as a Euro thing that doesn’t play in America, but Ford has enjoyed some success with the current Focus hatchback, and both the Kia Forte and Hyundai Elantra are offered here as hatches as well as sedans. Two of our favorite hatchbacks are the 10Best-winning Mazda 3 and Volkswagen Golf.
As to the Cruze, we won’t have to wait much longer to see the new version—in sedan form at least. Chevrolet will officially pull the wraps off of it this week.
