The era of uncertainty is over: The BBC has just announced that Chris Evans will head up an all-new group of Top Gear hosts.
Evans, a hugely famous British TV and radio host, is the first confirmed replacement for the departed Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May. Evans has signed a three-year deal as the lead host of the show, according to TopGear.com.
The newly named host is no stranger to avid Top Gear fans. He’s frequently been a guest on the show, and loaned his immensely valuable Ferrari 250 California to James May to be driven in the rain. The 49-year-old is a major Ferrari fan, with a 1971 Daytona Spyder and a 1963 GTO in his collection.
If you’ve been following the Top Gear saga, you’ll recall that Evans was one of the first potential replacements whose name came up after Clarkson was fired. Evans initially denied the possibility vehemently, then backtracked, and now he finds himself with a job.

In a statement, Evans said, “I’m thrilled, Top Gear is my favourite programme of all time. Created by a host of brilliant minds who love cars and understand how to make the massively complicated come across as fun, devil-may-care and effortless. When in fact, of course, it’s anything but and that’s the genius of Top Gear’s global success. I promise I will do everything I possibly can to respect what has gone on before and take the show forward.” Evans also confirmed that he will still host his current Radio Two morning show in addition to his Top Gear duties:
First tweet as new Top Gear host. I would like to say Jeremy, Richard & James are the greatest. And NO I’m not leaving the R2 Breakfast Show — Chris Evans (@achrisevans) June 16, 2015
Although BBC hasn’t named Evans’s new co-hosts yet, the broadcaster says production of the new season of Top Gear will start “in the next few weeks.” Meanwhile, rumor has it that Clarkson, Hammond, and May are close to signing a deal for an as-yet-unnamed car show with Netflix.
