Way back in 1991, we decided to set up a 1/4-mile drag race between a Ferrari 348ts and a GMC Syclone. The Syclone won. Here on eBay is a mint version of the Syclone’s twin brother, the GMC Typhoon.
The Typhoon was built by GM from ’92 to ’93 and, while looking like a body-kitted version of the Jimmy, was the ultimate stop-light sleeper. Under the hood was a beefed up version of the Jimmy’s standard 4.3-liter V-6 which, with the addition of two Mitsubishi TDO6 turbochargers, made 280 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. But it wasn’t just the raw power that cemented this truck’s rep as a pavement monster but also its unique all-wheel-drive system that featured a fixed 35-percent front, 65-percent rear torque split. In our Syclone test, we clocked a 5.3-second 0-60 time—quicker than most of the high-dollar sports cars available at the time.
In recent years, Typhoons have become harder to find in good condition, mostly due to their limited production numbers (around 4700). According the the seller, this 34,000-mile truck has been cosmetically restored, passed a mechanical inspection with a clean bill of health, and is in nearly original condition.
Admittedly, $21,900 is a lot for a 23-year-old GMC Jimmy. But this is one of only 132 trucks that rolled off the line painted Bright Teal—which either makes it more or less valuable than most, depending on how vividly you want to relive the ’90s.
