Despite the deep and gnawing Yankee hunger for CUVs, Subaru’s Tribeca [above] never sold in great numbers, even while the rest of the company’s mainstream product line pushed the niche automaker past Volkswagen in American sales. With VW preparing a new, bigger Tiguan and a larger MQB-based crossover, Subie could undoubtedly use a fresh seven-passenger uticle to stay ahead of Wolfsburg.
If a question from a survey taken by a Jalopnik reader is any indication, Fuji’s heavy industrialists have one in the works. The query reads, “In thinking about the Subaru brand and the possibility of a seven-passenger vehicle being offered in the future, please rate how well you like these names for the new vehicle?” The listed options are Centauri, Cypress, Ascent, Meridian, Sojurn, and Columbia.
While the Portlandia set would no doubt go ape for the last one, we’re casting our glutenous vote for the stars. Centauri is the obvious choice, with one tiny modification: Drop the “i”. Subaru Centaur? It’s obvious, as a man/horse hybrid is pretty much the ultimate crossover. Super-duper bonus? They could hire Christopher Walken to interview the thing in the TV spots.
