BMW has stated that is will offer a plug-in hybrid in each of its major model lines, and the first out of the gate is the X5 xDrive40e. The plug-in SUV arrives this fall as a 2016 model, priced at $63,095 with standard all-wheel drive. As expected, that’s more expensive that the standard, six-cylinder X5 ($54,895 for the sDrive, $57,195 with xDrive); it’s also more than the diesel-fueled X5 xDrive35d at $58,695. The plug-in is well shy of the V-8 xDrive50i, however, as that model starts at $71,695.
The pluggable hybrid X5 marries a 2.0-liter turbo four and an electric motor for a total system power output of 308 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, placing it just ahead of the six-cylinder X5’s 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft. BMW claims the hybrid can be driven 13 miles using solely on battery power, motivated by an electric motor that puts out 111 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Overall, the company expects an EPA combined-economy rating of 55 MPGe, and its 0-to-60-mph estimate is 6.5 seconds—exactly on par with the diesel.
The 9.0-kWh lithium-ion battery pack is located under the rear load floor, but cargo volume nevertheless is 34 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 72 cubic feet with the seats folded. The battery pack does, however, preclude the availability of the third-row seat, so the 40e is strictly a five-seater. Other options that are off the menu are Adaptive M Suspension, Active Steering, and second-row Comfort Seats. Otherwise, all the many X5 goodies are available.
The help maximize the EV portion of this PHEV, customers can opt to have a BMW charging station installed at their home, which can recharge a depleted battery in under three hours. They can also join BMW’s ChargeNow program for access to public charging stations. Unfortunately, the company’s joint-venture wireless-charging technology isn’t up and running yet, so drivers still need to physically plug in their plug-in hybrid SUV.
