2016 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S

Mercedes-Benz has given the crossover formerly known as the M-Class a major upgrade inside and out as well as a new name, GLE-class, and alas, Mercedes plans to charge for it. Prices recently announced indicate a sizable jump from last year’s levels, to start at $52,025 for the rear-drive 2016 GLE350 ($54,525 for the 4Matic model) and $53,425 for the oil-burning GLE300d 4Matic, an increase of $2700 and $2800, respectively. Step up to the GLE400 4Matic and the new price of $65,525 isn’t quite as much of an increase from 2015 ($1700), but it’s still hardly cheap. Further up the line, the rompin’ stompin’ $100,875 GLE63 AMG is the first M-class—er, GLE-class—to cross the $100K threshold, climbing $1550 from 2015, while the even faster S-Model (the first of its kind for a Benz SUV) brings a tally of $108,025.

Prices for the all-new GLE-class coupe models have not been announced, but expect them to add a significant premium both in GLE450 4Matic (which uses the same engine as the GLE400 4Matic SUV) and GLE 63 S AMG forms, because that’s sort of their whole reason for being. We’re also awaiting pricing of the newly added GLE550e 4Matic plug-in hybrid. All models are due in dealerships by early August save for the hybrid, which will come to the so-called “green” states (California, and the states that follow its emissions rules) about a month later.

We will bring you driving impressions of the new GLE very soon, at which point we’ll tell you if it is worth the extra dough. Stay tuned.
