We’ve been waiting, and now we know: After initially saying the new Mustang Shelby GT350 would make “more than 520 horsepower,” Ford has finally revealed the official figure. The GT350’s 5.2-liter flat-plane crankshaft V-8 makes 526 horsepower, along with 429 pound-feet of torque.Ford says those figures mark the GT350’s V-8 as the most powerful naturally aspirated engine the company has ever offered in a street-legal car. This is also Ford’s highest-revving V-8 ever, with a 8250-rpm redline. The torque peaks at 4750 rpm, with 90 percent available across a broad band from 3450 to 7000 rpm; the max horsepower arrives at a lofty 7500 rpm. And it sounds great doing so.
More details: Displacement is 5163 cc, with a bore and stroke of 94 x 93 mm. The compression ratio is 12.0:1. In the new GT350 and GT350R it will be paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.
As we recently learned, this awesome performer will come in a package that starts at $50,000—before dealer mark-up, that is. A handful of cars, both GT350s and GT350Rs will arrive this fall as 2015 models, with the balance being 2016 models.
Until then, fans may want to rewatch this video of the GT350 testing at VIR. Especially now that we know exactly what it’s packing under the hood.
