Ford has announced that Lincoln’s relentlessly mediocre “flagship” MKS sedan is going away in 2016. (Yes, they still make that car.) The announcement came at an event trumpeting the increase of Ford Explorer output at Ford’s Chicago assembly plant, where the MKS is currently produced. “Chicago Assembly Plant is vital to our global manufacturing footprint and will continue to manufacture the Ford Taurus, Ford Explorer and Police Interceptor vehicles even after we phase out production of the MKS in 2016,” Ford said.

This comes as exactly zero surprise to anyone who’s been watching the MKS’s sales over the last few years, particularly after the car has been plagued by one recall after another. To put it in context, for every MKS sold, Hyundai currently sells five copies of its Genessis, while Buick moves six LaCrosses.

Gee, what on earth could take its place? Well, a production version of the Continental concept, of course. At this point, Ford remains coy about the Continental’s production prospects, but we’ve been seeing Continental-shaped prototypes show up on the streets of Dearborn, and based on the advanced state of said prototypes, we expect it to appear as soon as mid-2016 as a 2017 model. For the Lincoln brand, that car can’t come a moment too soon.
