Ford’s much-maligned MyFordTouch interface is on its way out, to be replaced by the new Sync 3 infotainment system. We’ve previewed the Sync 3 system, and it’s a significant improvement. Now we know where it will appear first: the 2016 Ford Fiesta and 2016 Ford Escape, starting this summer. In addition to a revised menu structure, larger touch-point “buttons,” and pinch and swipe response, Sync 3 also can run several phone-based apps including Apple Siri Eyes Free. It does not yet, however, incorporate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but a report in the New York Times says that Sync 3 will offer them before the end of the year. Ford hasn’t said when they will arrive.
Meanwhile, Chevrolet boasts that it will have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto widely available on its 2016 models, and Hyundai has announced Android Auto for the 2015 Sonata. As for Sync 3, it will spread throughout the Ford lineup by the end of 2016.
