At this week’s Shanghai auto show, the major luxury automakers have rolled out their most opulent ideas for the Chinese market. Among them, Volvo nixed the front passenger seat in the all-new XC90 in favor of massive amounts of legroom for one chauffeured passenger; Ferrari built a one-off California T; and now Infiniti’s beckoning to big-money buyers with the Q70L Bespoke Edition, flaunting the whitest, quiltiest leather interior you ever laid eyes on.
The Bespoke Edition is based on the long-wheelbase version of the flagship Q70 sedan, stretched by 5.9 inches to better accommodate back-seat passengers. As Cadillac and Ford and every other automaker that operates in China are well aware, long-wheelbase luxury is the hot ticket in that market, which explains why Infiniti went into white-leather overdrive for this Bespoke Edition.
The stuff is everywhere: Quilted leather on the four passenger seats. Quilted leather on the door panels. Quilted leather on the headliner—the gosh-danged headliner! The interior is so immaculately white, you’ll want to ask passengers to put their shoes in the trunk before buckling in. Children and the recently spray-tanned are not allowed.
Infiniti says this Mr. Clean–approved interior serves to “fill the gap between the current interiors in production cars and luscious interiors of Infiniti’s concept cars.” Meaning that, while you won’t be able to get the Bespoke Edition’s quilted-everything interior on your next workaday Infiniti, the concept—along with the Q60 and Q80 concept designs—gives a glimpse at what future high-end Infiniti interiors might look like. We just hope such a blinding white interior package comes with anti-dazzle sunglasses for the driver.
