2017 Jaguar XE: U.S.-Specific Trim Levels, Engines (Including a Diesel!), and Features Detailed

Jaguar’s rollout of the new XE sedan, its first four-door designed to effectively take on BMW’s 3-series, has been a long, slow process. And it’ll roll on, since the XE won’t actually go on sale in the U.S. until this time next year. In the meantime, Jaguar has outlined the specifics of two of the XE’s engine choices, while also dishing out a bit more on some of the car’s features.

For starters, while we know that the mainstream 2017 XE will ultimately offer three engines, a manual transmission, and rear- or all-wheel drive, so far Jaguar’s only talking about two of the engines, one ZF eight-speed automatic, and the rear- and all-wheel drive bits. As we were already aware, the XE’s top-flight engine will be a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 making 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque—a version we’ve already driven. Jag has dubbed that XE variant “XE 35t.” The other engine Jag is talking about at this time is a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder making 180 horsepower and 318 lb-ft of torque, and models so equipped will be badged “XE 20d.” Pulled from the new Ingenium engine family, the diesel is expected to be very efficient (no EPA figures are available yet), and thanks to largely aluminum construction it will be relatively light-weight at just 304 pounds. Both engines are mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic, and both can be paired with rear- or all-wheel drive.



Intriguingly, Jaguar also will allow buyers to select from among Premium, Prestige, and R-Sport trim levels regardless of which engine is chosen. That roughly mirrors BMW’s ploy with its diesel 328d, which, like our long-term 328d wagon, can be had in spicy M Sport guise. The R-Sport trim will come with larger front intakes, satin chrome fender vents, black window trim, rocker extensions, a rear spoiler, and forged aluminum 20-inch wheels. Other than that, we know that two Meridian sound systems will be offered, the first being a 380-watt, 11-speaker setup, the other being a juicy-sounding 825-watt, 14-speaker ear-thumper. Missing is any information about the V-8 Jag plans to install in the XE (for a high-performance R variant), not to mention the gasoline-fed turbo four set to slot in below the supercharged six and the diesel four in the XE engine hierarchy. We expect those details, as well as final pricing and equipment, to be announced at a later date.
