Mercedes-Benz is recalling 5058 Smart Fortwo models in the U.S. for poorly made bolts that could loosen the steering over time, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On 2014-2015 Fortwo Coupe and Convertible models, along with the 2014 Fortwo Electric Coupe and Convertible, some bolts that attach the steering gear to the front cross member may have been improperly manufactured and could break apart over time. If that happens, the steering wheel may tilt, the stability control warning light may flash, and obvious noises that something is about to break may occur. Mercedes said it began investigating after receiving owner complaints outside the U.S. and found broken bolts on the cross member. No injuries or accidents have been reported.

Smart dealers will replace the steering-gear mounting bolts at an undetermined date. In March, Mercedes recalled 33,180 cars to fix taillamps and fuel tanks on late-model C- and CLS-class models. In February, the automaker recalled 147,224 E- and CLS-class models for rubber seals in the engine compartment that could potentially catch fire.
