Of the post-Communist Škodas, there is one near and dear to our hearts above all others. The Felicia Fun, a pickup variant of the company’s last vehicle built on a pre-Volkswagen platform. Featuring a midgate-esque thingy-dingy that, when folded down, allowed seating for four—sort of like a reverse Subaru BRAT—the Fun stands right up there with the LS6-powered 1970 Chevrolet El Camino, the Holden Ute HSV Maloo, the Shelby Dodge Rampage, and the Suzuki Mighty Boy as one of the finest exemplars of truckcardom in the genre’s checkered and glorious history. And now, just in time the annual GTI Treffen am Wörthersee gathering in Austria, Skoda has announced the Fabia FUNstar concept.
Conceptualized and constructed by a group of students at the Škoda Academy (we need a “My Child is an Honor Student at the Škoda Academy bumper sticker), the Fabia FUNstar, like the Felicia Fun before it, is based on the Czech automaker’s supermini. Featuring VW’s corporate 1.2-liter TFSI engine and a seven-speed DSG trans, the FUNstar rolls on 18-inch wheels sourced from the larger Octavia RS. It also has a 1400-watt sound system, because, after all, you’re superminitruckin’! The former Eastern Bloc’s versions of Lady Tigra and Bunny D are undoubtedly pleased as punch.
The unibody was stiffened to cope with the sudden lack of rear structure, and the B-pillar was widened for the same reason. Green LED running lights add a splash of Škoda style that’ll pair quite nicely with your Adidas tracksuit. We’re not sure about the green neon, though. Is it 1995 again already? If Skoda’s trotting out tiny pickups, it must be.
