It looks like Chevrolet may be taking a page from Nissan’s how-to manual on keeping its GT-R fresh, having announced the second spat of updates for the Corvette Stingray in as many years. After the current, C7 Corvette debuted for 2014, it received a series of minor running changes—and a new transmission—for 2015; now, the Vette is getting more minor changes for the 2016 model year, and most of the same updates are headed for the 2016 Corvette Z06, too.
Besides adding the ultra-limited-production Z06 C7.R Edition to the lineup (at least until the 500 examples sell out), as well as a trio of new design packages, Chevrolet has brought new colors, trim colors, and tech options to the Stingray and the Z06. Buyers can now opt for Corvette Racing Yellow or Long Beach Red metallic paint colors, a graphics kit that leaves part of the hood unpainted to display the carbon-fiber weave beneath, and a front-facing parking camera (only on the higher 2LZ and 3LZ trim levels). All 2016 Corvettes now offer a “power-cinching” (self-latching) hatch or trunk lid, depending on which body style is selected, a huge boon given that on today’s Vette they often require a hearty slam to shut all the way.
The Stingray, specifically, inherits a new flat-bottom steering wheel, a new standard wheel design (available in four finishes), and now offers two-tone “GT” (non-competition) seats. Also, you can opt for contrasting red or yellow stitching on Stingray 3LTs with the Jet Black interior, while GM’s excellent Magnetic Ride Control adaptive dampers are now available separately from the high-performance Z51 package. New options specific to the Z06 include a “Blade” wheel design and a Brownstone interior on Z06 3LZ models. Pricing for the 2016 Corvette and Corvette Z06 hasn’t yet been announced, but we don’t expect base prices to push much past today’s $55,995 and $79,995, respectively.
