Would you like to kiss someone in a transparent box filled with bacteria-killing LEDs and blood-pressure monitors? You may not, but future generations might enjoy hygienic makeout sessions in fully autonomous shuttles like this Rinspeed Snap.
Hailing from Rinspeed’s home of Switzerland, this “cozy cuddling pod” with a comfortable, four-person seating arrangement, is a multimodal luxury device. Rinspeed fits screens over bigger screens, screens on the armrests, a Lexicon surround-sound system, ultra-HD displays, glass with electrochromic tinting and laser-projected images, retinal scanners, and portable strawberry plants in “urban farming containers.” Rinspeed seems to lose its sensible Swiss mind more and more every year, and this concept has us pining for the days when the company used to install sunroofs.
But with high-speed Wi-Fi now commonplace in new cars and General Motors selling Starbucks coffee via your dashboard, the Rinspeed Snap may not be overreaching so much when it claims to stream company meetings, download personal files, and then erase everything when the rider reaches a destination. The Snap’s retinal scanners are supposed to guarantee personal data security, while the Level 5 automated vehicle perfectly guides itself across the city.
The hardware beneath the software includes a steel and composite chassis, which Rinspeed likens to a skateboard. The smooth, white underbody is a plain-looking mount for the 12-kWh battery pack, 51-kW electric motor, and casterlike front wheels that can angle up to 70 degrees (the rear wheels also steer). It’s quicker than Tony Hawk, with 62 mph arriving in five seconds. With the passenger cell detached, the Snap can become a mobile home, food truck, napping station, meeting space, or love shack. Four stanchions raise the body enough so the chassis can roll underneath and bolt back into place.
The Snap will makeits debut at CES in January. Whether or not the self-proclaimed “Swiss mobility mastermind” is correct about how we’ll interact with autonomous vehicles, we’d prefer to smooch in private.
