2018 BMW X2 (Euro-spec)

BMW has sliced its SUV pie so thinly that it’ll soon run out of single-digit numbers. The new 2018 X2 is almost here, predictably slotting in between the X1 and the X3, and it’s priced from $39,395. That’s $4500 over the starting price for the X1, with which the X2 shares its turbo-four powertrain and underpinnings, which it tops with a more rakish body.

Admittedly, the comparison isn’t exactly apples to apples, because the X1 offers a lower-priced front-wheel-drive variant, while the X2 comes standard with all-wheel-drive. Line up the two xDrive28i models and you’re looking at a price differential of $2500, which still strikes us as a questionable amount for a less-practical, only slightly more stylish piece with five fewer cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats.

Shoppers will find an array of option packages similar to those on the X1’s order sheet, including a $4650 M Sport X package with larger 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, darkened exterior trim, proximity key access, and a few other items. There’s also a $2600 Premium package that offers heated front seats, navigation, a head-up display, and a heated steering wheel. Driver-assist features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and forward collision warning are bundled into a $700 Driving Assistance package, while adaptive dampers and an M Sport steering wheel come in a $600 Dynamic Handling package.

All told, a loaded X2 will easily approach $50,000, but given the success BMW has found with the similarly irrational X4 and X6 models, it surely has reason to believe that the X2 will find a customer base all its own. It will find out for sure when the X2 goes on sale in the spring of 2018.
