Taking a page out of the Tesla playbook, General Motors is offering a software update to C7 Chevrolet Corvettes equipped with magnetorheological dampers, or Magnetic Ride Control if you’re up on GM trade names. This update can apply to models as old as 2014, which is the first model year of the Stingray, and those as new as 2016.

Corvettes eligible for the update must be fitted with the fancy dampers. That list includes 2014–2016 Stingrays fitted with the Z51 package, 2016 Stingrays (the first year Magnetic Ride Control was available to non-Z51 Vettes), and 2015–2016 Z06s, both with and without the Z07 package.

Why might one want to do this? According to GM, Corvette owners will see an immediate change in both ride and handling, with improved response and a “greater feeling of balance.” More important, a Z07-equipped Z06 with the updates saw improved lap times: It was one second quicker around the company’s Milford Proving Ground road course, which means it should be good for a tick or two at your track. Our home track is Virginia International Raceway—you know, that place we go every year for Lightning Lap.

Unfortunately, the data flash isn’t free of charge, as it is with running changes in Tesla’s software. Dealers will collect $350 for the update.

The update will not affect any vehicle warranty, and GM said that calibrations for additional models will come out at a later date.
