The second generation of Hyundai’s funky Veloster hatchback is right around the corner, and we came across these camouflaged photos that give us our best glimpse yet at what it will look like. From what we can see through the colorful disguise, the new Veloster features more distinctive side surfacing, although its overall shape doesn’t change much. And, yes, the three-door arrangement continues, even if the passenger-side rear door is not visible in these images.

We’re told that these photos show the Hyundai Veloster Turbo, which we assume will use the same turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder found in the current Veloster. Expect about 200 horsepower, with the engine’s output sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The base Veloster should use the same 161-hp naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four as the Elantra GT, given that the three-door shares its basic underpinnings with that hatchback.

Perhaps the most enticing tidbit about the new Veloster is the promise of an even hotter Veloster N, tuned by Hyundai’s new performance division. It’s tipped to share the same basic components as the Europe-market i30 N hot hatch, which is powered by a 271-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Look for the redesigned Veloster to make its debut in early 2018 as a 2019 model. The hotted-up Veloster N should follow a few months later.
