2018 BMW M5

The 2018 BMW M5 will undercut the Mercedes-AMG E63 S by $1800 when it goes on sale in the spring. Priced from $103,595, the BMW supersedan comes standard with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine that pushes out 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, figures that put the Bimmer down three horses and 74 lb-ft compared with its Mercedes-badged competitor.

Despite its power disadvantage, BMW claims the new M5 will scoot from zero to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, 0.1 second ahead of the E63 S’s claimed time. Like the Mercedes-AMG, the new M5 relies on an all-wheel-drive system that can disconnect the front driveshaft in order to provide owners with the tail-out antics of a rear-wheel-drive car. An eight-speed automatic transmission serves as the intermediary between the M5’s engine and drive wheels. Meanwhile, an available M Driver’s package raises the top speed of the 600-hp four-door from 155 mph to a hellacious 189 mph—3 mph faster than the E63 S, which is limited to 186 mph.

Unfortunately, BMW did not reveal the cost or additional features offered in the M Driver’s package when announcing pricing during the car’s U.S. debut at the 2017 Los Angeles auto show. Nor did the German company share pricing information for the limited-production M5 First Edition.

Capped at 400 units globally, the First Edition wears a coat of Frozen Dark Red Metallic paint, rides on black-painted 20-inch wheels, and sports black detailing on its grilles, tailpipes, and side vents. Inside, the special M5 features seats wrapped in white leather and held together by red stitching, as well as piano-black trim and a numbered M5 First Edition plaque on the center console. A BMW spokesperson confirmed that approximately 100 M5 First Edition cars will make their way to the United States when the model launches early next year.
