Srinagar: There are reports of fresh clashes between police and protesters in Srinagar, a day after the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir was rocked by violent protests over the arrest of separatist leader Masarat Alam.

Reports said protesters in Srinagar pelted stones at police.

The clashes started hours after a youth was killed and two others were injured allegedly in CRPF firing on demonstrators in central Kashmir's Budgam district earlier this morning.

Three persons were injured when CRPF allegedly fired upon the protestors in Narbal village, who were protesting against the killing of two youths in an Army operation at Tral in south Kashmir's Pulwama district early this week, police said.

Reports said that the police initially used tear gas to disperse the protesters, but as the crowd turned violent and started pelting stones, the personnel resorted to firing.

The injured youth were rushed to a hospital here, where one youth identified as Suhail Ahmad Sofi succumbed to injuries.

The other two youth are being treated upon, police said.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman said that preliminary inquiry into the incident indicated that the forces have allegedly acted in violation of the laid down Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

He said a case under various sections of the RPC, including 302 (murder), has been registered in Police Station Magam.

Meanwhile, Hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for shutdown in the state today to protest against Masarat Alam's arrest as well as the killing of two youths in Tral.

Alam, 45, hardliner was arrested from his home in Habbakadal area of the city on Friday morning, apparently after the Centre pushed for it.

Police late on Friday added Section 121A (waging war against the country) and Section 124 (sedition) to FIR lodged against Alam.

A court on Friday night remanded Alam, arrested over raising of pro-Pakistan slogans and hoisting Pakistan flags at a rally in Srinagar earlier this week, to seven-day police custody by a court in Budgam.

Also today, authorities placed several separatists, including moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, under house arrest.

Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest this morning in view of fresh protests in some parts of the Valley over killing of the two youths in Tral.

Geelani and several other second-rung separatist leaders continue to be under house arrest for the second consecutive day today, officials said.
