The real, in-the-metal deal

After months of previews, teasers, spy photos, and swelling anticipation, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is finally here. Chevys’ sixth-generation pony car debuted at a packed event on Detroit’s Belle Isle that was attended by members of the media and current Camaro owners (who brought along some sweet rides), and we finally have full information on the car’s three available engines, upgraded interior, and significant weight reduction. Most important, we—and now you—now know what the Camaro looks like, without strategically arranged shadows or prototype-standard camouflage blocking the view. Here are pictures we snagged of the new Camaro RS and SS at the reveal, in glorious high definition Technicolor.

The 2016 Camaro will be available with three engines, anchored by a turbocharged four-cylinder and moving up to a V-6 and a V-8, as on this SS model.

Believe it or not, but actual humans were behind the sixth-generation Camaro's creation. Important Camaro people, from left to right: Dan Ammann, President, GM; Mary Barra, GM CEO; Alan Batey, Executive Vice President and President, GM North America; Mark Reuss, Executive Vice President, Global GM Product Development.

You can tell it's an SS because it says so right there, in the grille. Behind that grille sits the same 6.2-liter V-8 found in the Corvette Stingray, albeit with 20 percent Camaro-specific parts. Somewhat surprisingly, the Camaro's V-8 makes the same 455 horsepower as the Corvette's.

One of the sixth-generation Camaro's biggest changes is to its size—it is 2.3 inches shorter overall than the outgoing model.

Have you ever wondered what the next Camaro might look like through another camera's lens? Neither have we, but now we know.

The size difference might not seem significant, but trust us, in person the Camaro feels noticeably more compact and athletic.

Having outsold the Ford Mustang for the past several years, the Camaro certainly didn't need to change much. Chevrolet apparently agreed, crafting a largely evolutionary look for the latest Camaro.

It may look evolutionary, but the 2016 Camaro certainly doesn't look boring. Low angles especially suit the car's broad, horizontal lines and muscular stance.

Because you can't debut a new model these days without a few strips of LED lights . . .

Chevrolet claims that the Camaro has shed over 200 pounds in the transition between generations five and six. The weight savings comes largely by way of the Alpha rear-drive architecture the new car shares with the Cadillac ATS.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Wait, the Cadillac ATS, you say? The one that even in its most potent form comes with a mere twin-turbocharged V-8? Indeed, folks, the Camaro SS is more or less a bargain ATS with a V-8.

Both the V-6 and V-8–powered Camaros can be had with a dual-mode exhaust system, which uses variable flaps to adjust the engine's volume from "rad" to "extra sweet."

The jury's out on that rear spoiler, but this angle does show off the new Camaro's tighter bodywork nicely.

One area that the outgoing Camaro needed vast improvement—or at least an injection of excitement—was its cabin. The new car does away with that model's plain-Jane dash while improving on its material quality. The intricate round air conditioning vents are quite cool (pun intended), although the central vents' placement down near the shifter is charmingly retro. Back in the 1960s when the Camaro was first born, many cars with air conditioning sported under-dashboard add-on units that placed the vents at knee level.

Buyers will be able to spec dual eight-inch cabin displays (one for the gauge cluster, the other sits in the center of the dash), and there’s also a new flat-bottom steering wheel.

Splashes of color help the new Camaro avoid the current model's dark, bunker-like cabin environment.

The 2016 Camaro's door panels are, quite literally, 478 percent more interesting to look at than the old car's.

. . . so does each front fender.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro RS

2016 Camaro RS models come standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four, but a redesigned version of GM's 3.6-liter V-6 is optional. This stealthy gray RS has the V-6, which puts out 335 horsepower and can be paired with a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic.

Very little differentiates the RS Camaros from their stronger SS counterparts, but the lack of a rear spoiler is one clue.

At launch, buyers will be able to choose from among 10 paint colors. This one would be high on our list—as would be the warm brown-colored interior scheme pictured here.

We've heard the V-6 rev in person, and with the dual-mode exhaust, it almost makes you forget about the V-8. Almost. Full engine specs: 335 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque.

Remember that base turbo four we mentioned? You're looking at it. Well, you're looking an an RS so equipped. The four-banger generates 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Eighteen-inch wheels and Goodyear Eagle Sport all-seasons are stock on non-SS models, and they can be upgraded to 20-inchers with Eagle F1 Asymmetric run-flats.

Interestingly, Chevrolet made the turbocharged four-cylinder standard, leaving the V-6 as an option; the V-8 comes only on SS Camaros. The strategy differs from Ford's plan for the Mustang, which sees the V-6 working base-car duty while the available turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine is an extra-cost option that slots in below the V-8. No matter how the engines are allocated and by whom, we can't wait to pit the new Camaro against the latest Mustang in a head-to-head comparison test. Consider our appetites whetted following a brief drive in a 2016 Camaro prototype.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS

A fine parting shot of the mighty SS.
