Remember the Volvo V40? It’s the hot, compact five-door hatch that Volvo doesn’t send to the U.S., the company instead content to tune our the gnashing of our teeth. That’s old news, however, but what’s new news is the V40 Carbon special edition, which officially is the first Volvo to come standard with the tuning kits designed by Polestar, Volvo’s racing and vehicle-tuning partner, for Volvo’s new Drive-E engine family. At least in Sweden.
Similar to the performance tune Polestar drummed up a while back for Volvo’s older turbocharged inline-six, the new “Polestar Performance Optimization” pulls a little more power from the engine, in this case, the company’s Drive-E gas and diesel four-cylinders. The tune is optional in non-Swedish markets, but wherever they’re purchased, Carbon cars also get a sweet carbon-fiber trim upgrade that includes sill plates and a significant portion of the roof.
There are special 19-inch wheels, red seat belts (which everyone knows add big power and shave seconds off of 0-to-60 times), and a whole lot of rarity, too. Just 343 of the V40 Carbon editions will be built—we have no idea where that oddly specific number came from—and buyers can choose between T5 (gasoline, 253 horsepower) and D4 (diesel, 200 horsepower) engines. But let us be clear: Those buyers won’t be Americans.
