Say you’d like a higher-zoot BMW—something exclusive—but can’t hang with the full-steam M badge, and for whatever reason, the wonderful B6 Alpina is either too large, too expensive, or too manual-transmission-deficient. Prepare to act quickly, because the 2016 BMW 435i ZHP Coupe Edition is on the way. It’s a 4-series that pays tribute to the beloved E46 3 and its ZHP performance package, which bumped up the punch by way of hotter cams, a higher redline, and sport-oriented chassis.
What do you get for your as-yet-undisclosed lump of change? BMW’s new-for-2016 Track Handling Package, an M Performance limited-slip diff, the M Performance package, and a smattering of various other M parts. The engine gains 35 horsepower—pushing it to 335—while torque figures vary depending on transmission choice. Opt for the manual and you get the full-boat 332 lb-ft, while those who decline to shift for themselves make do with a less-lusty 317. Which is still a 17 lb-ft better than stock. The power gains are due to software tweaks, a revised intake, and presumably, the M Performance engine cover. BMW claims gains of 0.2 second to 60 mph, and 0.5 second for the 50-to-75 sprint. They’ve also programmed in extra exhaust burble. Speaking of gas extraction, the ZHP also receives a lighter exhaust system with stainless tips.
Outside, the ZHP is treated to front and rear carbon-fiber spoilers, more aggressive-looking rocker panels, an M Performance rear diffuser with an expanded-metal grille. The piece de resistance, however, might be the M Performance Black Kidney grilles. The dreaded Black Kidney, bane of Welsh miners for centuries, has now come to put the stinkeye on the Prius ahead of you in the fast lane.
Inside, you get aluminum hexagon trim with gloss black accents, and naturally, an M Sport steering wheel. The Bavarians are only building 100 ZHPs, making it a rarer machine than its namesake, and indeed, more exclusive than the Alpina B6 or the M4. Production begins in July, so if you’re leaning toward hopping on the ZHP train, it’d behoove you to get on the stick.
