Areeb Majeed, one of the four youngsters from Kalyan who joined the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), returned to Mumbai via Turkey on Friday morning.
HT had first reported that Areeb, who was earlier thought to have been killed in an air strike, was alive and had called his father, Dr Ijaz Majeed, seeking his help to return from Turkey.
On November 25, Ijaz informed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) he had received a call from Areeb on November 20. He said Areeb told him he had worked with the ISIS for three months before fleeing to Turkey. Ijaz had sought the NIA’s help to get his son back to India.
Details are awaited on how he managed to escape from Iraq and go to Turkey. According to police sources, Areeb landed at Mumbai International Airport at 5.15am on Friday and was immediately taken into custody by NIA officials.
Ijaz said, “I am yet to meet him or contact him. I will first offer my Friday prayers, and then plan on how to meet my son.”
The other three youngsters from Kalyan, a part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in Thane district of Maharashtra, who
joined the ISIS in the last week of May are Aman Tandel, Fahad Shaikh and Shahim Tanki.
