Amit Shah attacks Mamata for playing politics of vote bank - Economic Times

KOLKATA: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Sunday launched his party's campaign for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections due next year and the assembly polls in 2016, calling upon the electorate in West Bengal to vote for change and give his party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi a chance to develop the state.

Addressing a well-attended public rally near Kolkata's Victoria House, Shah attacked Trinamool Congress party leader and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for playing "politics of vote bank".

"There will be change in many places in the days ahead," Shah told the gathering. "Narendra Modi's victory chariot has brought changes in Maharashtra. Changes in government in Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir and Jharkhand will also take place. But we will consider our victory in Bengal as the real victory. People of West Bengal want development and for this you will have to vote for BJP in next year's elections to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and assembly polls in 2016."

The Amit Shah rally was an issue of numbers. The Trinamool Congress government had tried its level best to prevent the rally from happening because it did not perhaps want Kolkata to get an idea of how many people exactly are with the BJP. The issue had even gone to court, which had given the BJP the go-ahead to hold the rally under controlled situation. What happened on Sunday was this: Amit Shah's rally had almost as many heads as Mamata's July 21 rallies usually do. From the Victoria House podium, the sea of humanity straight as far as the Park Street flyover beginning Lindsey Street.

The BJP count was 5 lakhs, Trinamool's count was 1.5 lakhs, and it needs no rocket science to understand that the Kolkata Police count obviously had to tally with what Nabanna said. In reality, however, Amit Shah's rally was as huge or as less Mamata's Shahid Diwas rallies any day. In so far as Mamata is concerned, Sunday's turnout is a cause for intense worry because there is now doubt that the saffron brigade is giving Trinamool a run for its money.

Incidentally, this was BJP's first public meeting at this venue since 1993. The party had sought the Calcutta High Court's intervention after the state government and the Trinamool Congress-led KMC refused the party permission to hold the rally near Victoria House. The high court had on Friday paved the way for the rally while criticising the Banerjee government's "rigid" stance.

"I appeal to didi that if she wants to indulge in vote bank politics, then she can do that, but for that she shouldn't put the safety of the nation at stake. Don't provide shelter to Bangladeshi infiltrators just for vote bank politics," Shah said.

Taking a dig at the TMC MPs' recent protest in the Parliament on the black money, he asked why Banerjee was "protecting" those involved in the Saradha scam.

"I want to ask didi whether Saradha chit-fund money is black or white money. I want to ask didi why she is protecting the people involved in the scam," he said.

On the lack of industrial development in the state, Shah said, "It is important for development to reach West Bengal for development of the east. Many big industries have closed down in West Bengal, the youth is unemployed and condition of infrastructure is worse. You tell me, if Modi ji would want to work for development of Bengal, would Mamata ji allow it?" he said.

Shah promised voters that if the BJP won the next assembly polls in the state, it would make West Bengal the No. 1 state in the country."If you make up your mind to support BJP, I can assure you that we will make West Bengal No. 1 state of the nation. Bengal has intelligence, hard work and passion to do something, only thing that lacks is a strong leadership," he said.

Shah also said that "Modi ji's vision was to have a Congress-free India and he has achieved his goal. Now, we want a Trinamool-free Bengal.

People of your state had given CPM a chance to work for the state. You have also brought a change in 2011 and gave Mamata Banerjee a chance to work for you. But what she has done for the state is known to you and I hope this time you will give BJP a chance to enable Narendra Modi to carry our his development schemes in the state."

"In her recent meetings, Mamata Ji raised questions about me and wants to know who is Amit Shah? I am telling her that I am Amit Shah, a small worker of BJP, who has come here to evict your party from Bengal," Shah said.
