Pakistani smugglers also opened fire from across the border to give cover to their Indian counterparts, but failed. Giving details, BSF inspector general Ashok Kumar said the operation was launched on the basis of an intelligence input and a naka was laid near Bohar Wadala border outpost.
About 500 metres away from Pakistan's Tent Hut border outpost, a patrolling party of 38 Battalion in Gurdaspur sector observed some suspicious movement and challenged the group of smugglers.
The patrolling party opened fire at them while the Pakistani smugglers also fired at the BSF party. Three smugglers -- Tasveer Singh, Balwinder Singh and Fateh Singh, all residents of Kalanaur -- were injured in the firing. Tasveer, a history-sheeter and kingpin of the racket, later succumbed to injuries.
Twenty-two packets of heroin, one pilstol, 30 live rounds, three Pakistani mobile phones and four SIM cards and around 20gm opium were seized from them.
Nine criminal cases were registered against Tasveer. During preliminary interrogation, the two arrested smugglers expressed ignorance about any information about Pak smugglers.
