"Raj Bhavan is usually the venue for swearing-in events, but since an estimated 35,000 people are expected, it was not possible to organize it in Raj Bhavan. We decided to shift the venue to Wankhede stadium," a senior bureaucrat said. Two more venues, Bandra-Kurla Complex and the open space across the council hall, were considered, but BJP leaders chose the stadium.
On May 1, 1960, when Maharashtra was formed, chief minister Y B Chavan was sworn in to office at the quadrangle across Mantralaya by governor Sri Prakasa. In subsequent years, Raj Bhavan became the venue for swearing-in ceremonies.
The tradition was broken in 1995, when Manohar Joshi, the CM at the head of the Shiv Sena-BJP government, decided to hold the event at Shivaji Park. After governor P C Alexander did his duties on March 14, Sena supremo Bal Thackeray held a rally at the same venue. "Besides Raj Bhavan, Shivaji Park is the most convenient venue for such events. Owing to restrictions, it is not possible now to reserve Shivaji Park,'' said the bureaucrat.
In 2004, when Vilasrao Deshmukh expanded his cabinet, the swearing-in ceremony was held at Azad Maidan. Governor Mohamed Fazal administered the oath of office to 25 cabinet members, including Chhagan Bhujbal on November 9.
Now Fadnavis, the second youngest chief minister of the state and the first from the BJP, will take oath at Wankhede stadium, the fourth occasion outside the Raj Bhavan.
