Chinese army opposes Indian move on border posts - Times of India

BEIJING: China's People's Liberation Army on Thursday said it was worried about India's move to create border posts at 54 points along the border in Arunachal Pradesh. It advised India not to complicate the border situation.

The statement came a day before planned meetings in Beijing by minister of state for external affairs and former chief of army staff V K Singh. New Delhi has sent him instead of external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj.

"We have noticed the relevant report," Chinese defence ministry spokesman Yang Yujin said at a briefing. "Dispute still exists in the eastern part of China-India border. We urge the Indian side to do more to maintain peace and stability in the area and do not do things that may complicate the situation."

The Indian home ministry had earlier announced it would create 54 new border posts, to be manned by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, along the border that separates Arunachal Pradesh with Tibet.

China has been routinely building infrastructure in the Tibetan areas on its side of the border. Beijing says there is no dispute in the western sector. But India says China is occupying at least 38,000 sq km of its territory in the disputed Aksai Chin region in the western border.

Yang clarified the two countries had made progress in ensuring the boundary remained peaceful after the issue of a consultation and coordination mechanism on border affairs was discussed by the two sides in New Delhi earlier this month. Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to New Delhi in September has triggered some "positive" developments and brought an end to a border stand-off in Chumar in the western region, he said.

"We hold the view that both sides should work hard together and move towards the same direction," Yang said. "In the meeting, both sides reached consensus on measures for maintaining a peaceful border area, among which many concerned military aspects."

The achievements include a decision by the two sides to set up a timely meeting mechanism between military headquarters, a move to ensure neighbouring military districts and frontier forces establish more meetings on the frontier posts, establishing of a hotline connecting military headquarters from both countries, and telecommunication links between frontier forces from both sides, he said.
