The Porsche Club of America’s Werks Reunion started out four years ago as a plucky little show that was easy to drop in to on the way to The Quail, but for 2017, the PCA’s Monterey get-together has grown significantly, expanding to larger digs at the Corral de Tierra Country Club out between Laguna Seca and Salinas. Which is to say, if you’re planning to attend Werks, expect to make a day of it.
For those obsessed with Ferry’s stable of steeds, there’s no greater variety of Porsches on the Monterey Peninsula during the Monterey Car Week festivities. This year’s crop of air-cooled 911s seemed dominated by RS clones and Singer-influenced backdate specials, as well as 912s with their four-bangers excised and replaced with all kinda flat-sixness. Still, there was ludicrousness to be witnessed, such as the ’72 Targa with a Chevy small-block crammed into the back. The owner thoughtfully decided to augment the flexible flyer with a hefty cage, lest the willowy German twist itself into a Rennsport Rennpretzel.
The 356 section seemed to offer the greatest selection of interesting stock vehicles and tastefully modified outlaws. The crowd seemed especially partial to a chipped, scuffed, and dinged Pasha Red 356 America that had been sorted mechanically after sitting in storage for 43 years. We, however, found ourselves taken by a fully restored, original-sunroof 1959 356A in Stone Gray.
We left Pebble Beach for Werks at 10 a.m. and arrived back around 4 p.m., after having spent around three hours on the show field, one and a half of those in a food-truck line. Was it worth the better part of a day of valuable Car Week time? On the bright side, entry is free, in stark contrast to the wallet-gouging prices of other area shows, but in terms of what’s on offer for the chunk of time expended? Porsche nerds will continue to geek hard over it—the turnout this year was proof of that—but for the casual and curious, the location and traffic make it a less compelling option than it once was.
