This is embarrassing for BMW. Before its public debut, the all-new X4 was caught by our spy photographers with its pants off and its shapely rear end completely exposed.
Unsurprisingly, the new X4 will once again be an X3 with resculpted hindquarters. Still, the new X4’s tail is worth paying attention to, as it incorporates the brand’s latest styling elements. Besides the new taillight design, the new X4 features a license-plate mounting point that has been moved from the rear hatch to the rear bumper. The result is a cleaner look, even if it does bear a passing resemblance to the Mercedes-Benz GLC coupe.
U.S.-spec X4s are likely to share their powertrain lineup with the X3. For 2018, the base all-wheel-drive X3 is dubbed the xDrive30i and comes with a 248-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four. Buyers can upgrade to the more powerful M40i, with a 355-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. Both models come standard with all-wheel-drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Overseas, the X4 will be offered with a handful of additional powertrain options.
We anticipate that BMW will formally unveil the 2019 X4 next month at the Frankfurt auto show. Look for sales of the South Carolina–built crossover SUV to begin by mid-2018.
