2018 Nissan Armada

Three years after Nissan first demonstrated a new “smart” rearview-mirror technology, it’s finally putting this camera system into production in the 2018 Armada. Nissan’s Intelligent Rear View Mirror (I-RVM) uses a camera mounted on the rear tailgate to project a real-time image onto an LCD screen mounted on the rearview mirror. It is similar to Cadillac’s Rear Camera Mirror. The new Nissan camera will only be available on the 2018 Armada’s top Platinum trim level, which starts at $59,885.

The idea behind the I-RVM is to enhance visibility when the driver’s rear visibility is impeded by cargo, passengers, darkness, or glare. The narrow-angle camera also enables a wider view than a typical rearview mirror, with an aspect ratio of 4:1. A button can deactivate the camera system in case you want to use the normal mirror.

The only other change for the 2018 Armada is the addition of an updated infotainment system, which will be standard on all 2018 Armada models. It still uses an 8.0-inch display but now comes with the more modern NissanConnect connectivity services and includes a few additional USB ports.

Otherwise, the 2018 edition of Nissan’s biggest SUV features the same SV, SL, and Platinum trim levels as before; the SV and SL go up in price by $700, while the Platinum is $1100 dearer than it was in 2017, likely in part because of the addition of the new rearview-mirror system. The more tech-savvy new Armada goes on sale on Friday, September 1.
