The 2018 Nissan Leaf has shed its cocoon of camouflage and revealed the butterfly that lurks beneath. Snapped in Barcelona, Spain, by an eagle-eyed viewer of Norway’s TV2 commercial TV channel, the latest images of the new Nissan Leaf offer us our first look yet at the sheetmetal that will wrap the compact hatchback’s electrified powertrain.

As predicted, the second-generation Leaf offers more palatable looks than those of today’s car. Gone are the current model’s grille-less mug and bulging headlights. Instead, the new Leaf sports a face reminiscent of the European Nissan Micra’s, along with the brand’s V-motion grille. The new Leaf captured here also has a black roof that contrasts with its white-painted body. Out back, wide rear hips and bulging taillights replace the current hatch’s rounded tuchus.

Styling aside, the 2018 Nissan Leaf is anticipated to be packed full of technology. There is likely to be a choice of battery packs, with the largest expected to provide more than 200 miles of range. Additionally, the new Leaf will feature Nissan’s ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous driving technology that can steer, brake, and accelerate the car during single-lane travel, as well as a switch to increase the accelerator pedal’s regenerative braking ability, which will allow Leaf drivers to bring the car to a halt without using the brake pedal.

Nissan will unveil the new Leaf on September 6, and we anticipate U.S. sales of the new model will start in early 2018. While the new Leaf’s additional tech will likely drive the price of the top-of-the-line model past the $40,000 mark, we expect the entry-level model to bear a starting price close to today’s $31,565 base price.
