New Delhi: Chickens have come home to roost for Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) chief ministerial nominee Kiran Bedi as the lawyers are up in arms against her for an incident which took place more than 25 years ago.
Office-bearers of several Bar associations in Delhi have come together to issue an appeal to the people not to vote Bedi for, what they called, her "blatant misuse of power". Coming under an umbrella organisation called 'Action Committee: All Bar Associations of Delhi', the lawyers have called the first woman IPS officer of the country-turned-activist-turned-politician as "Lathi-charge Bedi".
The association of lawyers has recalled the unsavoury incident of 1988 in which they were caned in the Tees Hazari courts on her orders. Bedi was DCP (North) when the incident had taken place. It alleged that Bedi ordered handcuffing of a lawyer in the court in violation of Supreme Court direction and made derogatory and threatening remarks against the Magistrate who discharged the lawyer.
Coming under an umbrella organisation called 'Action Committee: All Bar Associations of Delhi', the lawyers have called the first woman IPS officer of the country-turned-activist-turned-politician as "Lathi-charge Bedi".
"She (Bedi) ordered brutal lathi-charge on unarmed and peaceful lawyers and registered a case against the injured lawyers, which was dropped by CBI holding it as a false case. She brought a 2000-strong mob which destroyed the Tis Hazari lawyers' chambers and vehicles. She manipulated and forged records/logbooks to create false evidence in her favour," the lawyers said.
The lawyers, who constitute a sizable and influential section of the voters, went on to state that Justice DP Wadhwa Commission indicted Bedi and recommended that she should not be posted on any sensitive posting, which was accepted by the Government. "She was never entrusted with sensitive posting after her tenure as DCP (North) in 1988," they said.
To buttress their point, the lawyers have quoted other controversial incidents involving the BJP's chief ministerial candidate for the Delhi Assembly elections. They alleged that Bedi directed the RamIeela organisers to change their 100-year-old route without any justifiable reason and when they refused, she ordered a brutal lathi-charge on the innocent persons participating in the Ramleela tableau.
"In an incident of dacoity-cum-murder at Narela, when the residents were protesting against the inaction and late arrival of SHO, Bedi, instead of taking action against SHO, ordered firing on innocent persons, resulting into death of a person," the lawyers' association stated.
The lawyers cited several instances when Bedi was allegedly admonished for her "administrative failures". "The Adviser to the Administrator of Chandigarh wrote to the Home Ministry asking for her removal on the ground that her presence in Chandigarh was harmful to public interest," they said.
The lawyers further accused Bedi of deserting her duties as Superintendent of Police in Goa without proper leave. Further, they recalled that the Governor of Mizoram had to issue a formal note of displeasure against Bedi for leaking information to the press.
"Bedi breached trust and constitutional obligation when she planned to disrupt the visit of then President of India R Venkataraman. Then Governor of Mizoram informed the Intelligence Bureau about her plans. The Governor of Mizoram made a note that Bedi was not a person to be trusted with classified information and security," the lawyers alleged.
Appealing to the voters not to vote Bedi, the lawyers accused her of being "inefficient, irresponsible and vindictive" and alleged that "she can do anything to achieve her personal ambitions".
"She's known for insubordination and defying direction of superiors," the lawyers said in their appeal.
With the lawyers turning against an already beleaguered Bedi, the challenge before the BJP's CM candidate seems to have become tougher.
