SHIKARPUR – At least 60 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a suicide attack on central imambargah during Friday prayer.
Sources said that a suicide bomber exploded him outside the imambargah located in Shikarpur's Lakhi Dar at the time when people were leaving after offering prayer. A number of victims were trapped under debris after the roof of the imambargah collapsed due to the intensive blast. Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) central leader Allama Mohammed Amin Shaheedi announced three days mourning, describing the incident a failure of the government. He said that the party's further course of action would be announced later.
Civil Hospital Shikarpur Superintendent Shaukat Memon confirmed that at least 59 bodies and about 90 others injured including several children were shifted to the hospital. He said that condition of many wounded people was critical and it was feared that death toll could rise further. Sindh Minister for Information Minister, Health and Local Bodies, Sharjeel Inam Memon said that an emergency was imposed at all hospitals in Shikarpur and surrounding cities.
He said that provincial Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Sindh Health Minister Jam Mehtab Dahar have taken strong notice of the incident. The attack came as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, to discuss the law and order situation in the city. PM Nawaz Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Ameer JI Sirajul Haq, Quaid of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Altaf Hussain, PTI Chairman Imran Khan, PPP leadership, PML-Q’s Chaudhry brothers, leaders of other political and religious parties of Pakistan strongly condemning the loss of precious lives in tragic incident have expressed condolences with the bereaved families.
The prime minister directed for provision of best medical facilities to the injured and sought a report of the incident. It is the bloodiest single sectarian attack in Pakistan since January 22 last year, when 24 Shia pilgrims returning from Iran were killed when their bus was bombed in southwestern Balochistan province.
