Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to be face of BJP's Delhi campaign. (Source: PTI photo)A day after all the parties favoured fresh elections in Delhi, the Union Cabinet, at a special meeting on Tuesday, decided to ratify Lt Governor Najeeb Jung’s recommendation for dissolution of the assembly.
After his meeting with BJP, AAP and Congress leaders on Monday, at which all the parties expressed their inability to form the government, Jung is learnt to have sent his report to President Pranab Mukherjee recommending dissolution of the assembly. The President, in turn, is learnt to have forwarded Jung’s recommendation to the Centre.
All eyes are now on the Election Commission, which will announce the polling dates. It will also cancel the recently announced bypolls to three assembly seats in Delhi.
Meanwhile, the BJP indicated that it would continue to bank on the Modi factor. Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay announced on Tuesday that the party has decided to contest the assembly polls under the “collective leadership” and will not project any chief ministerial candidate.
“The party has decided to contest assembly elections under the collective leadership. We believe in collective leadership, but it doesn’t mean that party lacks good leaders. We will not declare any chief ministerial candidate,” he said.
Justifying the decision, Upadhyay said the BJP emerged victorious in the Haryana and Maharashtra assembly polls without declaring a chief ministerial candidate.
BJP had declared Harsh Vardhan as its chief ministerial candidate in the run-up to the assembly polls last year. The announcement had triggered internal bickering.
Upadhyay said the party would decide on its chief minister at the “appropriate time”. “There is a democratic process within the party. The party high command and the MLAs will decide on the next chief minister after the elections. There is no issue about the CM candidate now,” he said.
“We are very confident of winning the Delhi elections. We have won the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana and we will emerge victorious in Delhi also,” Upadhyay said.
Asked if he was in the race for the top post, he said, “This question is not pertinent now. We have decided to contest the elections under collective leadership. That’s all.”
Upadhyay said that BJP would give a “transparent and responsible government” to the people of Delhi. Slamming AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, he said: “Kejriwal ran away from his responsibilities after ruling Delhi for just 49 days. People of Delhi will not trust him again… they will choose BJP.”
