The Toyota 4Runner is delightfully anachronistic, a sport-utility vehicle for those hard-core types who wouldn’t be seen in a crossover. But then there are those who think a day without putting a little sunlight between the tires and terra firma is a day not worth living. For them, there’s the 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro.
Featuring Fox shocks at all four corners and TRD springs front and rear, the 4Runner TRD Pro sits 1.0 inch higher than stock and provides nearly an additional inch of wheel travel. The front dampers feature a 2.5-inch body and 1.8-inch piston and include seven internal-bypass zones (four compression, three rebound) to provide progressively firmer action off-road while maintaining a modicum of on-road comfort. The rear dampers feature 11 bypass zones (seven compression, four rebound), and 2.0-inch piggyback reservoirs hold additional oil for harsh conditions. Matte black TRD 17-inch wheels with an increased offset widen the track by nearly an inch for improved stability, and Nitto Terra Grappler P265/70R-17 A/T tires provide looks and traction consistent with the TRD Pro plan.
Offered in Super White, Midnight Black Metallic, and TRD Pro–exclusive Voodoo Blue, the TRD Pro 4Runner features LED fog lights, a blacked-out grille with TOYOTA lettering, projector-beam headlights with smoked trim, and fresh TRD lettering on the front skid plate. A new roof rack stores additional camping gear or duffel bags full of Affliction T-shirts. The factory-spec 4.0-liter V-6 and ancient five-speed automatic transmission provide motivation.
Tunage is via a new-for-2019 standard Entune Premium JBL audio system with integrated navigation and apps. There are TRD Pro floor mats, a TRD shift knob, and red-stitched Softex faux-leather seats, while red logos on the front headrests spread the word that you’ve got a TRD Pro.
We love the 4Runner for many reasons, including its ability to carry a bunch of people and stuff in relative comfort after a day of racing tumbleweeds in the desert. The TRD Pro amplifies those feelings by a factor of rad.
