New spy photos of the 2019 Cadillac XT4 show the small crossover SUV will address at least one major gripe we—and many customers—have had with current Caddy interiors. It’s all about the buttons, baby.

When we saw these images of the new model, which was caught with its cloak off in Michigan, we were as stoked to see real HVAC buttons as we were spotting a cupholder in the next-gen Porsche 911. A second row of buttons for seat heating and cooling and other auxiliary functions, plus what appear to be a volume knob and a rotary controller for the CUE infotainment system on the center console, provide evidence that the company has heard complaints that the company’s touch-sensitive controls are more finicky than flashy. Lincoln reverted to physical controls a few years back, and while that company’s cars lacked Cadillac’s vibrating haptic feedback upon each press, the change was a tacit admission that frustratingly jabbing at dashboards isn’t luxurious. Still, as more companies like Land Rover and Audi digitize entire center stacks, it remains to be seen whether buyers will be turned off by a plethora of touchscreens.

Elsewhere, this XT4 displays piping and black leather trim on its creamy white seats. That’s tasteful. Also, the center screen’s steep angle and recessed placement in the dash suggest it might pivot forward electrically, as the top screen on the Range Rover Velar does. The compact XT4’s competition includes the BMW X1, Lexus NX, and Lincoln MKC. We expect to see the wraps come off the Cadillac’s interior—and exterior—in the coming months.
