Finer Nine: Mazda Makes G-Vectoring Control, Extra Safety Features Standard on 2018 CX-9

Mazda already has a winning package with its CX-9 SUV. It captured first place in the three-row division at last year’s 10Best Trucks and SUVs, but there’s always room for improvement. For the 2018 model year, Mazda has added more features and revised the second-row seats for easier access. But unfortunately, like your rent this fall, prices are creeping up slightly as well.

The 2018 Mazda CX-9 trim breakdown remains the same as it was for 2017. With front-wheel drive, the base Sport starts at $33,070 (up from $32,460), the Touring starts at $35,900 (versus $36,910), and the Grand Touring starts at $41,410 (the same as 2017). A Sport package is available for the Sport trim for an additional $1290, while a Touring Premium package is available on the Touring for $1890. These three models can be had with all-wheel drive for $1800, while the top-spec CX-9 Signature comes standard with all-wheel drive and starts at $45,255. In all CX-9s, a 250-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Though neither the exterior looks nor the interior setup receive major changes, Mazda updated the vehicle with additional technologies and premium equipment. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automated forward-collision mitigation that works up to 19 mph, and G-Vectoring Control are now standard on every CX-9. Mazda also claims it improved second-row comfort, made third-row access easier, and upgraded the sound insulation for the entire cabin.

The bottom-rung CX-9 Sport comes with cloth seats, LED head- and taillights, 18-inch wheels, and a 7.0-inch infotainment screen. Contrary to its name, the new Sport package adds more safety features rather than anything that will change the dynamics. It includes automatic headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated front seats, and adaptive cruise control.

The Touring trim upgrades the interior experience with leather seating, an 8.0-inch infotainment screen, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror; the only things that actually are new are a tilt function for the driver’s seat and a power passenger seat with height adjustment and lumbar support. The optional Touring Premium package brings more goodies including LED foglights, navigation, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, front and rear parking sensors, second-row sunshades, and a sunroof.

The Grand Touring trim now includes heated second-row seating and a heated steering wheel; that’s on top of features such as 20-inch wheels, aluminum interior trim, roof rails, driver’s seat memory, and a head-up display. The top-of-the-line CX-9 Signature trim level brings auburn-colored nappa leather, rosewood trim, an LED-lit grille, and LED interior lights. The 2018 CX-9 will arrive at showrooms later this month.
