In a move surprising approximately no one, Volkswagen has announced that it will make the sporty R-Line treatment available on its all-new seven-passenger Atlas SUV.
The Chattanooga-built three-row Volkswagen Atlas will be available in five trim levels when it arrives in spring as a 2018 model, although the R-Line package will only be available later in the year and will come on the upper-end SE and SEL trims. Focused on adding a dash of sportiness to the already well-equipped SE and SEL, the R-Line exterior treatment includes 20-inch aluminum-alloy twin-spoke wheels and distinctive front and rear bumpers, the front highlighted by air intakes and the rear with a diffuser design. Add nearly invisible side skirts and, of course, R-Line badging. Interior features include an R-Line steering wheel and an R-Line logo on the infotainment start screen. The pedals wear a set of stainless steel covers.
Sadly, none of the R-Line’s cosmetic hubris extends to the powertrain, which is the same as other Atlas models: a 235-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four or a 276-hp 3.6-liter V-6. All use an eight-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive in four-cylinder configuration while 4MOTION all-wheel drive is optional with the V-6.
The 2018 Atlas R-Line will make its in-the-metal debut next week at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Pricing has not yet been revealed.
