Aiming to transition from semi-autonomous to fully autonomous vehicles, BMW is unveiling an autonomous prototype at the 2017 CES show in Las Vegas this week that is based on the all-new 2017 BMW 5-series. The prototype relies on an onboard computer that can cross-check the vehicle’s position and surroundings with a digital map, giving the driver the option to let go of the wheel and cede control of the car to the electronics.
Although the 5-series autonomous prototype may not be equipped with the BMW HoloActive Touch system also making its debut at CES, BMW noted that the car sports a handful of features to improve the autonomous-driving experience, including access to Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Prime Now. Once the vehicle is placed into autonomous mode, the car goes into Passenger mode, and occupants can stream movies or television via Prime Video and order needed items online through Prime Now. BMW claims that once a video is selected, the vehicle will automatically dim the interior lights and close the sunshades in back, while using Prime Now provides passengers the opportunity to order items and select a pickup point along the vehicle’s planned route.
In spite of its prototype status, BMW’s autonomous 5-series appears ready for primetime. No surprise, really, given the brand’s previously announced plans to introduce an autonomous electric vehicle by 2021. Nevertheless, we’d wager that an autonomous-capable BMW 5-series or BMW 7-series will be available on dealership lots before decade’s end.
