The $400,000 Ford GT is unlike any other car, and Ford wants that to be reflected in every part of its purchasing and ownership. With an initial batch of 500 units, the GT is only available to people whom Ford deemed qualified after an application process. Now that the lucky select few have been chosen (and 6006 others denied), Ford has revealed that the ordering process will be special as well. Each customer can pick the colors and options for his or her car using this miniature ordering kit, which comes complete with a authentic materials and bite-size wheels.
The kit’s box is a work of art in itself. It’s made from real carbon fiber weave and has the same type of latch found on a GT race car. Inside, the pieces aren’t like ones you’d find for a toy model car that you can assemble. Instead, they’re examples of what each customizable part looks like. Eight small models show off each of the color options and what they’d look like with different removable racing stripes. Six wheels display different designs and brake-caliper colors. Swatches of carbon fiber, Alcantara, and leather give buyers a clear idea of what their interiors would look and feel like.
“The Ford GT ordering kit is a critical piece in the purchase process,” according to Henry Ford III, who is global marketing manager for Ford Performance. “This high-quality kit is a hands-on tool for Ford GT customers to enhance their ordering experience. Authentic colors, finishes, and materials will provide them an intimate, tactile way to discern the multitude of choices to configure their ideal supercar.”
To help buyers sort out what they’d like, a Ford GT concierge will be available for individual service. And see that small rectangular impression on the bottom right corner of the box? Once an order is completed, and the car is built and given a serial number, Ford will make a VIN badge that replicates the one on the car, so the box and the vehicle will match. Adorable.
