2009 Honda S2000.

This year in America, dealers have sold a number of discontinued automobiles, including 45 Dodge Avengers, 15 Nissan Cubes, six Scion iQs, and a lone Porsche 918. In Australia, however, a dealer just sold something a little more surprising: a brand-new Honda S2000.

The 10Best-winning roadster — which we once took to Bonneville — hasn’t been sold in the States since 2009, or Down Under since 2008. Due to its impeccable chassis and high-winding engine, it remains a cult machine, and its legend has continued to grow since Honda pulled the plug. According to Australia’s CarAdvice, the last S2K sold in that market went for an eye-watering $73,590 AUD, which translates to $54,792 American, a $15,000 to $20,000 premium over what the cars sold for on our shores.

The dealer didn’t report a selling price for the new-old-stock S2K, but we imagine the buyer paid a pretty penny to wrest it from the showroom floor. It’s rumored that the S2K may return, but, with Honda’s sporting future built around electrification and turbochargers, we’re not liable to see the likes of this high-winding sports car again.
