It’s said the night is darkest just before the dawn, and before the sun rises on an updated Mercedes-Benz S-class family, the German brand is rolling out the Mercedes-Benz S-class coupe Night Edition at the Detroit auto show next month.Order books will open on January 9, 2017, with the dark-themed two-door set to reach customers in August. (Night comes earlier in Europe; there, buyers get the car starting in April.) The Night Edition wears AMG front and rear fascias, a set of 14-spoke AMG wheels in black, and Night Edition badging on the front fenders. The grille, side mirror housings, and side sills are done in black. Matte-gray paint, as shown, is an available option. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz engraves “Night Edition” on the steering wheel, ensuring owners will always remember what kind of S-class coupe they’re piloting.
While Europeans will be able to get their Night Edition S-class coupes with either six- or eight-cylinder power, U.S. customers are expected to receive only the V-8, all-wheel-drive S550 4MATIC. With 449 horsepower from its twin-turbo 4.7-liter V-8, the S550 4MATIC coupe sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 13.0 seconds at 111 mph in our tests. In other words, the Night Edition will be plenty quick. Perhaps even quick enough to outrun the dawn.
