Sometimes the best way to get the bright light of public attention onto an existing model is to go dark. That explains why GMC, Jeep, and even Mercedes-Benz models –have offered special “night” editions in recent years. Such is the industry’s pace of refreshes and updates that Hyundai, just two years into the current-generation Tucson, felt it must join the black bandwagon, with the 2017 Tucson Night that is on display at the 2016 SEMA show this week.

The Tucson Night is exactly what it looks like: a Tucson Sport (the second-most-expensive trim level, which already blackens some of the exterior) with 19-inch matte-black Rays wheels, a black-tinted panoramic sunroof, and gloss-black mirrors. Aluminum pedals and a perforated-leather steering wheel distinguish the interior. Other goodies include LED map lights, red Rays center caps, and, proving that it’s the details that really matter, red valve-stem caps.

Gray, white, black, and the sharp Caribbean Blue paint pictured here are the only Night-compatible colors. Hyundai hasn’t announced pricing, but figure on about a $2000 premium when the Night goes on sale later this fall, in both front- and all-wheel-drive versions. About 4000 cars will be allocated, or roughly half of all Tucson models sold in October alone. Better to know now than learn, too late, that the Tucson Night is sold out.
