Auto shows, like the big aftermarket one in Las Vegas we can’t stop talking about right now, are an opportunity for manufacturers to brag about their cars and demonstrate what they’re capable of. They’re a chance to display the possibilities. Chevrolet, at the 2016 SEMA show, is exaggerating the many facets of the Camaro with the Turbo AutoX, the COPO, and this, the SS Slammer concept.
Despite sounding like a WWE event taking place on a Liberty ship, the Slammer is a custom, lowered muscle car that follows a pretty traditional modification formula: paint plus wheels plus suspension. The Slammer comes out of the shadows with a tricoat Dazzling Black paint job and sits low over street-rod-inspired 22-inch front and 24-inch rear chrome wheels, thanks to an air-adjustable suspension.
Of course, Chevrolet wanted to use some items from its own parts catalog, so the car features a brand-sourced ground-effects package, black bow-tie and Camaro badges, tinted lights, Brembo front brakes, and a Chevrolet Performance axle-back stainless-steel exhaust system. Some finishing touches include a painted engine cover, “custom closeouts in the engine-compartment panels,” and an Adrenaline Red interior. Under the hood is a stock 455-hp LT1 V-8, paired with a six-speed manual transmission.
Chevy’s aim with the Slammer was to be big and bold, but considering what else usually shows up in Sin City, this car is almost low-key.
