Tesla’s Model X crossover has been on a long and meandering road to the marketplace—first promised in “early 2015,” then delayed to “late 2015,” with deliveries for later orders pushed well into 2016. Now, we have official word: Tesla will put the first Model X crossovers in customers’ hands in September. Separately, the company said the more-affordable Model 3 is slated to be revealed in the first quarter of 2016 ahead of deliveries in “late 2017.” Early adopters, rejoice!This news comes to us through Tesla’s just-released Second Quarter 2015 Shareholder Letter, which details the company’s quarterly production and deliveries. The letter says Tesla is has been producing “release candidate” Model X bodies in its new body shop equipped with 500 robots, and has just conducted a one-week plant shutdown at its Fremont factory to accommodate the shared use of the general assembly line for both the Model S and Model X.
Other news: Tesla produced 12,807 vehicles in the second quarter, exceeding its own expectations and setting a record for the company. It also set a record for delivering vehicles, sending 11,532 of them out to the waiting hands of Tesla customers. The company also “recognized revenue of $20 million” from its newly introduced used car sales program. Revenue was up nearly 40 percent from a year ago, to $1.2 billion for this past quarter—although as has always been the case, the company operated at a net loss, burning $184 million in the past quarter when measured via generally accepted accounting principles.
